Truck drivers and small fleets face major challenges, including low freight rates, high fuel and operating costs, and load availability issues due to competition from larger carriers. Delayed payments and broker problems hurt cash flow, while strict regulations and ELD mandates add compliance burdens. Driver shortages, retention issues, and parking shortages make operations harder. The freight market is volatile, and long hours impact work-life balance and mental health. These factors make it tough for small trucking businesses to stay profitable. 

If I had to give one piece of advice to someone just starting out in the trucking business, it would be: Prioritize Financial Discipline. The trucking business can have fluctuating income and significant expenses. It's crucial to develop strong financial habits from the start. This includes: Creating a detailed budget, Tracking all expenses meticulously, Building an emergency fund for unexpected repairs or downtime, Understanding the true costs of operating your truck, including fuel, maintenance, insurance, and permits. Avoid over extending yourself with large loans, especially on equipment. By maintaining financial discipline, you can weather the ups and downs of the industry and build a sustainable business.
